Project Title 1000237669 Central Utilities Plant Control Room Renovation
RFQ Text UC San Diego’s Central Utilities Plant (CUP) is located in Revelle College section of campus.  The plant is a 64,000 OGSF structure that consists of a basement, a main floor and a mezzanine.  It was originally constructed in 1963 and currently supplies chilled water, high temperature water, and electricity to the majority of the 12 million square foot campus. The plant houses two 13.5 MW natural gas turbine generators, one 2.8 MW steam turbine generator and has more than 20,000 tons of chilled water generation capacity, and 320,000 lb/hr of steam boiler capacity.  The electricity, chilled water, and high temperature water are distributed to the campus via an underground tunnel system.  The CUP control room is the hub of monitoring these utilities, both inside the plant and out on the campus and is occupied 24/7 by one plant operator, and periodically by a second operator who is based on the plant floor.

UC San Diego will be selecting an Executive Architect to perform programming, planning, design, cost estimating, bid, and construction phase services for the interior renovation for a major control room renovation to occur in phases, with input and guidance from the plant operating and in-house Facilities Management personnel. Note that internal programming sessions have already taken place and the remaining effort can be highly focused. Some of the main components will include the design of a combination main control room along with a multipurpose/chart room/conference room.
The objective is to have the work complete and occupied in February, 2014. The estimated construction cost budget for the total project is $800,000.
